As well as the five citadels, Cromwell's forces built smaller forts and occupied many castles.
The location of the forts and castles is shown on the adjoining map, as is the location of the five citadels. Each fort or castle has an identifying number and the details are given on the following sheets, each sheet covering a specific geographic area or areas, as defined on the map.
Drawings of two of the forts are shown, as is a drawing showing the size of these forts relative to Ayr citadel. The layout of various types of castle design are also shown.
Troops were also garrisoned in towns and cities but are not listed in this website unless they occupied a fort or castle.
